April Fool’s Day

It rolls around this Thursday. Really, that’s a great day for it, as the unsuspecting victims of our assorted pranks are just trying to get through another long week…and by Thursdays, are usually oblivious to their surroundings.
That makes it almost too easy.
Over the years, I’ve been partner to some great on-the-air pranks. There was the year on Murdock, Hunter & Alice that we recorded the sounds of various cell phones ringing…and every time we talked, just let them play in the background. Some found it funny, while others later called and yelled at us because they had spent 10 minutes looking for their cell phone. Or kept answering while they were driving and thought it was dangerous.
Back in the 1980s, while I was Larry Nelson’s producer, we created the sounds of the big downtown Seattle April Fool’s Day parade, complete with marching bands, floats, etc. I did the play-by-play and Larry would come to me “on the scene”. Management went ballistic, yelling at us later, saying how irresponsible it was to make it sound like a real parade. What was the problem? In the words of KOMO radio management, “People from Lynnwood might drive all the way down to Seattle and think there’s really a parade!”
Probably the best in-home prank was passed along to me by a next door neighbor, Chelsea Douglas. You know that nozzle in the sink that you rinse off dishes with? She taped it on…so that when you went to turn on the water, you got sprayed! OK, a little soggy, but very clever.
So be on your guard. This is fair warning. Thursday is the day to be super skeptical, to take everything with a grain of salt and to loosen up that sense of humor a little bit.
Happy day, fools!
