The Road to Walla Walla is Paved With Bad Jokes

Driving from Seattle to Walla Walla is certainly worth it, but it is a LONG drive.  Almost five hours on the road, if you obey the speed limit and have a weak bladder.

Over the years, I’ve done more than my fair share of driving to Yakima.  That’s a little over 2 hour trip with a nice mountain range, windmills and other sites to keep you entertained.  But once you hit the Yakima Valley, you find yourself driving along a long stretch of desert with occasional small towns dotting the way.

That gives you two options: embrace the boredom or think of some kind of game to mentally play while you drive.  Not surprising, I went the route of playing my brand-new game, “Think of something stupid to say about each of the small towns you pass through.”

I thought I would share some of the dumber things that came to mind.

  • Terrace Heights—“But Patty’s only seen the sights a girl can see from Terrace Heights!”
  • Union Gap—I wonder if anyone there even remembers Gary Puckett
  • Zillah—I’d stop, but everyone in town would want to tell me how much my house was worth
  • Granger—I should yell, “Hermione!” out the window.
  • Sunnyside—I should stop for breakfast and order eggs, “Just up!”
  • Richland—That’s where I broke out in song: “If I were a Richland…deedle, deedle, deedle, deedle, deedle, deedle, deedle, day….”
  • Touchet—Touchet? I never heard you say, “Engarde!”
  • Walla Walla—Wine! Wine! Yes! Yes!

Of course, then I did them in reverse over on the way back.

Maybe there’s something to this whole “embracing the boredom” thing….
